As one of the earliest building materials, clay is basically like a building hero, with its affordability, abundance and accessibility. But like every hero, it has a weakness. Its kryptonite is its low mechanical strength and durability. Enter me, fascinated by the clay materials at its core on a mission to figure out exactly how the mechanical strength of these materials can be optimized. Literature provides studies of clays that are fortified with binders and stabilizers. This gives me the opportunity to approach clays as building materials differently. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne contribue de mani\u00e8re significative \u00e0 la d\u00e9gradation des mat\u00e9riaux de construction, des g\u00e9omat\u00e9riaux et du patrimoine b\u00e2ti. Lorsqu&#8217;ils cristallisent, les sels peuvent exercer une pression m\u00e9canique sur les surfaces des pores, entra\u00eenant ainsi la d\u00e9gradation des mat\u00e9riaux. Malgr\u00e9 son importance, les m\u00e9canismes de cristallisation au sein des milieux poreux restent mal compris. Notre \u00e9tude combine des simulations mol\u00e9culaires, des d\u00e9veloppements th\u00e9oriques et des exp\u00e9riences microfluidiques pour quantifier et clarifier les origines de la pression de cristallisation \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9chelle la plus fine. I started in 2021 my PhD Thesis titled \u201cMultiscale characterization and modelling of the hydromechanic-gas behaviour of a bentonite-sand mixture\u201d. The PhD is a collaboration between three groups of Navier laboratory (G\u00e9otechnique, Multi-Echelle and RMP) with Andra (French National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management). We study the multiphysics involved in the processes of hydration and gas migration in an expansive material for the sealing systems of the Cig\u00e9o project (deep geological disposal) led by Andra. Our main contributions involved experimental techniques such as NMR relaxometry, MRI and X-Ray \u00b5CT, notably the quantification of adsorbed\/free water populations and the detection of gas pathways. My research focuses on the experimental investigation of deformation modes in the elementary microstructures that constitute a heterogeneous carbonate rock. This work involves combining mechanical tests with imaging techniques, allowing for continuous monitoring of local deformation processes. This approach generates a tremendous amount of data to analyze but provides high-quality insights into the deformation under various scales and loading conditions.
